Psychological safety - book recommendation

„The worst single aviation disaster in history actually occurred on the ground.”

And it was the lack of psychological safety that laid underneath it:

The incident involved two planes at Los Rodeos Airport on the island of Tenerife when at a critical moment, the flight engineer did not speak up about his (correct) concern that another plane still occupied the runway from which the captain intended to take off.

The flight engineer didn’t feel safe enough to take an interpersonal risk and question the capitan’s decision.

“The Fearless Organization” illustrates this and many other examples of situations where the lack of psychological safety led to poor decision-making but it also offers many insights on how building psychological safety can truly impact organizations for the better.

We still talk too little about psychological safety and we still understand it not well enough. Yet, it’s crucial for our workplaces.

There is no inclusion without psychological safety and that’s why I recommend this book to everyone, but especially to leaders and managers on their journey to inclusive leadership.

Have you read it? What are your thoughts? Do you think psychological safety is adequately prioritized in organizations today? If not, what do you think can be done to improve it?
