We are biased, and…

Sometimes the question of bias seem to be taken from two extremes:

𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵 vs 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘪𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘴.

It’s not “enither/or” situation though, our brains are too complex for that.

To me, understanding our brain, and the mechanisms behind bias is the key element that allows to take away the self-judgment from the unconsciousbias training and in the same time for us to take agency over our behavior.

🔹 Yes. We are wired for implicit bias 𝘈𝘕𝘋 we are also wired for connection.

🔹 Yes. We are wired for implicit bias 𝘈𝘕𝘋 it is a soothing realisation – it helps us to accept ourselves in the shortcomings of our humanity and take away the shame which blocks the learning.

🔹 Yes. We are wired for implicit bias 𝘈𝘕𝘋 neural pathways in our brain are changeable; No matter where we are today on the journey of accepting others - we are capable of change.

🔹 Yes. We are wired for implicit bias 𝘈𝘕𝘋 we can self-direct neuroplasticity.

We can train our brain, through repetition and persistence, to feel ok in feeling discomfort, we can stretch what we perceive as safe, we can choose kindness over fear and flourish in our potential as humans.

I find the above incredibly soothing and encouraging to not be frightened and overwhelmed knowing I am biased.

How about you?
