gendered sprinkles and universal design

If kids get it, we can too!

Last Friday, together with my daughters, I was on hunt for cupcakes’ ingredients and aside from grocery shopping we also made a discovery: Apparently, 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿!

“Naturally” pink and glitter goes for a Little Princess and blue for a Superhero boy

At start it sparked a profound disbelief in my daughters but then they moved to action.

🔄 They first went for <empowerment solution> and switched the labels - so pink for boys, blue for girls.

🚫 But a moment later, they asked about what seemed even more important:

"Do we need those labels at all, actually?"

...and they just chucked it away all together.

If kids can come up with universal design by themselves, we can too!

... and Dr. Oetker - please do better.

What are your thoughts when you see this? In what other situations do we over-focus on identity traits instead of finding solutions that take individual needs into account but are universally designed?

Ps. The cupcakes were delicious and looked pretty, regardless the box from which the sprinkle came
