Call people out but also call them in
Call people out but also call them in*
Reacting and responding to #microaggressions, biased behaviors, #discrimination is important. We should all be feeling accountable for what we do and say, and play our part in calling such behaviors out.
However, I agree with Jennifer Brown who says: we need to be mindful to not dismiss entire groups of people just based on their belonging to a group with privileged identity.
It’s not only unfair.
It causes building greater distance and prevents them from getting involved and using their power for good in the DEI field.
Instead, we should be practicing calling people in.
We should be inviting all people, also those with privileged identities to play their role in moving the needle towards more #equality and #inclusion.
DEI is not about building opposite camps of dominant and dominated, but about inviting everyone to recognize their responsibility, assessing their power potential to leverage others and accountability for it.
Everyone has a potential to do better at it and if we want to move forward, we need to do this together.
