Principles of inclusive language

Yesterday was the European Day of Languages and we celebrated linguistic diversity in Europe.

Language is of one of the most powerful ways we, as individuals and organizations, can practice #inclusion.

To me inclusive language is one of the most beautiful languages because it strives to reflect the world in its real #diversity, as it is... not as we are.

And yet, from my observations, it’s one of the areas of DEI where organizations underdeliver on their aspirations and promises and there is still a lot to do.

Some time ago I’ve been invited to the #podcast of Anna Harężlak she/her to talk about inclusive language: 🎧 Listen to the episode (in Polish)

Anna asked me about principles of inclusive language and today I wanted to share my thoughts about what are characteristics of inclusive communication.

Take a look at the carousel 🔽

In short in my opinion the principles are:

1️⃣ sensibility
2️⃣ impact over intention
3️⃣ accountability
4️⃣ progress over perfection
5️⃣ accessibility

I really believe that inclusive language is:

🔹 not only worth it
🔹 not only the right thing to do

🔹 …it’s fundamental for building the sense of #belonging

What are some examples of inclusive language practices that you've seen or implemented successfully? Let's inspire each other with real-life examples of inclusivity.
