we need more EXPERIENTIAL learning in DEI

Do you also feel we desperately need more engaging activities in DEI training?

The video I’m sharing made me think of my roots as DEI trainer that derive from non-formal education based on experiential learning where it’s all about:

  • triggering a relatable reflection

  • creating spaces where participants can, through experience, connect with the topics and feel the impact on a personal level

  • curating exercises that can help to truly internalize and apply the outcomes into daily actions

Once I’ve watched that video, I thought of an idea on how would it work to turn it this concept into a training experience:

𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘴: 𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳, 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳. 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘴…

How many great eye-opening discussions could it spark in the debriefing session afterwards? How such simple experiment could help to highlight the disparities and obstacles that women face in their career and encourage greater empathy and understanding among colleagues?

I wonder what is your opinion about brining experiential learning to the training room. Have any exercises that been particularly impactful to you as a trainer, participant or an organiser?
