"Belonging" by Owen Eastwood - recommendation

“In so many endeavors today, from sport to business we see the achievement of an outcome at the cost of broken people” - Owen Eastwood

Diving into "Belonging," by Owen Eastwood I expected something different – I guess some data based insights as in most books related DEI I recently have read.

Instead, what unfolded, was an almost philosophical and spiritual reflection on #belonging, intertwined with captivating storytelling inspired by author’s Maori roots and with examples taken from sports.

This book is not about how much the lack of feeling of belonging costs business and how much business can gain from brining more inclusivity into the processes.

It’s rather about:

📍 our species’ evolutionary story, telling us that the purpose of groups is to promote the wellbeing of their people.

📍 the success of a group being an illusion without the core #wellbeingmarkers being met

📍being mindful that despite cultural differences, we are all receptive to a well-articulated collective purpose and that leaders should pay attention to that

This approach, recalling our human need for working together for the benefit the collective, while maintaining our holistic health, was very refreshing.

Do you believe it's realistic, in the realm of business, to apply the principles of collective purpose, as the author has done with world-class sports teams, with the same impact or even at all? Feel free to share in the comments.
