be brave to be bad at something new

I’ve spent a big part of the last 3 months in training rooms, mostly with #leaders and managers.

And there was a sentence that I’ve heard at every workshop related to DEI:
𝙄’𝙢 𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙄’𝙡𝙡 𝙙𝙤 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚

We are paralyzed with fear of making a mistake.
So, eventually, we end up doing nothing new.

It’s only understandable we try to prevent harm – towards others and ourselves. We are anxious to come across and unempathetic, we are scared to be judged.

But we need to change this mindset if we want to build a true inclusion.

Be brave to be bad at something new (Jon Acuff)

Be brave to be a work in progMESS.

Be brave to be a perfectly imperfect leader on a journey to becoming a more inclusive one.

There is no other way than through our mistakes.

And there is the other side to it too.

As we're building higher and higher expectations towards our leaders, we also need to build a culture where we forgive them for their mistakes on their DEI journey.

Where we appreciate their efforts, and acknowledge their imperfection.

The more room we create for understanding that they will fail, the more leaders will feel safe to try. And eventually succeed!

We are growing in this, step by step, together.

Let’s focus on the progress.

Progress over perfection.
