Diversity calendars - DEI sprinkles?
In the spirit of celebrating today a Fat Thursday in Poland, a true feast for all doughnut lovers [yes, unapologetically raising my hand], I was reflecting on what I would call DEI sprinkles.
How do I define DEI sprinkles?
🔹 So called Diversity Calendars - DEI initiatives that emerge from different observances and are an opportunity to show up for underrepresented groups
🔹 Interesting webinars, events, talks with guest speakers about DEI
🔹 Community projects
Am I against Diversity Calendars? Absolutely not, quite the opposite.
I think they are a great way of making topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion more accessible to employees. I would go as far as to say, that business organizations in Poland are great in providing quality education for adults and I saw a true, meaningful change happening after workshops and webinars I had a pleasure to deliver.
But/and…
I think there are at least 5 of conditions that need to be grounded first, so that you have actually something to sprinkle on:
1. Having a DEI strategy and a solid plan of DEI initiatives connected to achieving the goals should be your base
2. Diversity Calendar shouldn’t be running your DEI - it’s a great addition, not a foundation
3. Showing up the whole year long for the underrepresented groups, being a true ally
4. DEI initiatives should be responding to actual challenges and be consulted with members of ERGs
5. Involving self-advocates and making sure their contribution is properly recognized and not un-paid work for the general public.
Would I want a DEI doughnut without the sprinkle? No.
But I think it’s important to keep the sweet balance.
